Chile is the world's most important copper producer. The state-owned industry was established in 1968 as a joint venture with US companies, but was fully nationalized under Allende. It accounts for 35% of Chile's GNP. New investments in gold mining will bring Chile into the world's top ten producers. It also leads the world in fishmeal production and has a flourishing wine industry.
